Dahod (Gujarat), Jul 21 (PTI) Three persons have been arrested for allegedly stealing gold bars worth Rs 28.60 lakh from a jeweler here by setting up a fake branch office of a reputed private bank, police said on Tuesday.
The stolen property was fully recovered by a team of Dahod Local Crime Branch after making the arrests on Monday, officials said.
On July 15, the accused, who claimed to be from a reputed private sector bank, visited Mahavir Jewelers and said they wanted to buy gold bars for donating during the next day’s Rath Yatra, said Deputy Superintendent of Police J P Bhandari.
After the deal was finalised, the jeweler was called to a fake branch office of the private bank to deliver gold bars weighing 200 grams. After taking possession
of the gold, the accused handed him a bag filled with A4-sized sheets of paper. He was told that the bag contained half the payment and the remaining amount was being arranged.
While the jeweler waited in the ‘office’, the accused escaped through a back door, DySP Bhandari told PTI.
During the probe, police identified the car the accused had used. When it was spotted arriving from the Rajasthan side on Monday, police intercepted the car and apprehended Dipaksinh Rajput, a resident of Kheda, and Rajasthan residents Lalitkumar Rathod and Adil Majid.
“Lalit had allegedly visited the jeweler’s shop to gain the complainant’s trust, while Dipaksinh was allegedly involved in collecting the gold and Adil was supporting them,” said Bhandari.
