The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday offered a rare insight into the men’s team’s inside jokes. In a video shared on their social media, several players, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and support staff members are seen pulling captain Shubman Gill’s leg after he won his first toss in seven Tests.
West Indies captain Roston Chase called ‘heads’, but the coin came up ‘tails’. Gill opted to bat first, and after a brief discussion with broadcaster Murali Karthik, was caught doing a mini fist-pump. Axar Patel came to greet him first, celebrating sarcastically as if they had won the match.
Gambhir, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, and others stood waiting. Jadeja gave him a ‘well done’. Gambhir then told Gill, jokingly, that Bumrah had
already marked his run-up and was ready to bowl, which meant he was expecting the skipper to lose the toss and see his team put to bowl first.
Gill contested the trolling, arguing that the team got what they wanted in four of the seven toss losses, but Bumrah pointed out that even Mohammed Siraj was ready. Siraj came up, looking the happiest, and gave him his congratulations, too. Watch the wholesome video here:

“We will bat first, the wicket looks good to bat on Day 1. Hopefully we can pile on runs. Consistency is the key for us. To be able to repeat performances and to be able to have the same intensity in every match that we play. Something that we often speak about and that’s what we are trying to look for in this test match as well,” Gill said.
His team indeed didn’t let him down with their intensity. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a brilliant 173* (253), while KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan contributed 38 and 87, respectively. India were at a brilliant position of 318/2 at the end of the day with Gill standing alongside Jaiswal at 20* (68).
