Filmmaker Siddharth P. Malhotra’s upcoming Meena Kumari biopic Kamal Aur Meena is once again making headlines over reports surrounding its potential lead cast. The names of Saif Ali Khan and Triptii Dimri were reportedly surfaced recently, and it was said that the actors are in discussions to play filmmaker Kamal Amrohi and legendary actress Meena Kumari, respectively. However, the casting has not been officially confirmed, with Malhotra recently urging everyone to wait for the formal announcement once the contracts are finalised.
Amid the ongoing speculation over the cast of Kamal Aur Meena, director Siddharth P. Malhotra clarified that no casting announcement should be considered final until the makers officially confirm it. He took to his
Instagram story and rubbished Saif and Triptii’s casting reports. He wrote, “Absolutely touched and delighted by the love and interest around Kamal Aur Meena. But a humble request to the media: please stop the speculation and unconfirmed reports.”
He added, “We are actively working on the film, and the cast, studio and other details will be officially announced by us once everything is signed and locked. Unnecessary conjecture doesn’t help the film, the actors or the studios involved.”
“When we have something official to share, we promise you’ll hear it from us first. With gratitude for all the love and support,” he concluded.
Kiara Advani’s name had earlier been linked to the project, with reports suggesting that she was being considered for the role of Meena Kumari.
At the heart of Kamal Aur Meena is the relationship between Kamal Amrohi and Meena Kumari, whose romance was closely intertwined with their work in cinema. Amrohi, who directed and wrote the classic Pakeezah, cast Meena Kumari in the lead role. Their tumultuous personal equation and creative partnership went on to become one of the most discussed relationships in the history of Hindi cinema. Talking about the film, Siddharth wrote on social media, “Kamal Aur Meena – a cinematic experience that promises to capture one of the most iconic love stories in the history of Hindi cinema. Kamal Aur Meena will bring to life the epic, real-life romance between the legendary director and screenwriter Kamal Amrohi and the celebrated actress Meena Kumari. With access to over 500 handwritten letters exchanged between Kamal Sahaab and Meenaji as well as personal journals detailing their life together with the insights and research, we have in telling this story invaluable.”
The project is backed by Bilal Amrohi, the grandson of Kamal Amrohi, in collaboration with Saregama and Rohandeep Singh.
