Delhi University expressed grief over the collapse of a paying guest (PG) accommodation in Delhi’s Satya Niketan, as student and teacher organisations raised concerns over safety standards at private hostels and PG facilities across the capital.
The five-storey boys’ PG, identified as “Hostel Daze”, collapsed in Satya Niketan near Delhi University’s South Campus at around 1:30 pm on Sunday. By Monday morning, the death toll had risen to six. Around 11 were rescued, while those injured people have been admitted to AIIMS Trauma Centre.
“We are deeply pained and saddened by the building collapse in Delhi’s Satya Niketan,” the university said in a post on X, adding that its thoughts were with the affected students and families. The varsity also said it was
ready to support students affected by the incident.

The collapse has triggered concerns over structural and fire-safety compliance in private student accommodations, particularly around Delhi University’s campuses and colleges.
The National Democratic Teachers’ Front (NDTF) called for an investigation into private hostels and PGs, warning that narrow lanes in several student residential areas could hinder rescue operations during emergencies. It also raised concerns over compliance with structural and fire-safety regulations.
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest outside the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) headquarters, alleging negligence by civic authorities and demanding safety inspections of student accommodations across Delhi.

The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) also alleged negligence and urged the government and Delhi University administration to intensify rescue efforts.
While, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) said the incident highlighted the broader problem of illegal construction and unsafe housing in student areas. It cited poor ventilation and sanitation, insecure tenancies, lack of formal rent agreements and arbitrary rent increases.
