Heavy monsoon showers continued to lash Mumbai and neighbouring districts on Thursday, prompting authorities in Palghar to declare a holiday for all schools and colleges across the district, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its weather warning to a Red Alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar.
According to the IMD’s latest nowcast warning issued on July 2, intense spells of rain are very likely to occur at isolated places over Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar during the next three hours.
Residents have been advised to take all necessary precautions as heavy rainfall continues to intensify across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Palghar Schools And Colleges Closed Amid Red Alert
Palghar district remains under a Red Alert, following which the district administration
announced the closure of all schools and colleges for the day as a precautionary measure.
The decision was taken to ensure the safety of students and staff as heavy rainfall continues across the district.
Mumbai-MMR Rain Toll Rises To Four Dead, Two Injured
The ongoing spell of heavy rainfall has also turned deadly across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), with four weather-related fatalities reported and two people injured.
In Kharghar, a 17-year-old boy drowned in a pond. A 26-year-old man died after being electrocuted in Bhiwandi, while a 51-year-old man lost his life after a portion of a building collapsed in Mumbai’s Walkeshwar area.
In another incident, a 45-year-old man was killed after a ceiling collapsed inside a building in the Kamothe area of Navi Mumbai.
Meanwhile, two girls sustained injuries after coming into contact with electrified waterlogged surroundings in Nerul, Navi Mumbai, highlighting the dangers posed by flooding and exposed electrical infrastructure during heavy rains.
Authorities Urge Residents To Stay Vigilant
Authorities have urged people to:
- Avoid venturing into waterlogged areas unless absolutely necessary.
- Stay away from damaged buildings and unstable structures.
- Keep clear of exposed electrical wires and installations.
- Follow official weather advisories and local administration updates.
- Exercise caution as heavy rain continues to affect Mumbai and the MMR.
