Lahore, Sep 28 (PTI) An event to mark the 119th birth anniversary of revolutionary Bhagat Singh was held in Pakistan’s Punjab on Monday.
Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation Pakistan organised a cake-cutting event at the Democratic Lawn of the Lahore High Court Bar Association, attended by lawyers, civil society representatives and admirers of the revolutionary leader.
Speaking on the occasion, the foundation chairman, Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi, said Bhagat Singh’s struggle was an important chapter in the history of the subcontinent’s freedom movement and that his courage, political awareness, and sacrifice remain relevant to younger generations.
“Bhagat Singh is not merely part of the history of a particular region or community; he is an important part of the shared
historical heritage of the subcontinent,” Qureshi said
He stressed the need to introduce younger generations to the history of the freedom movement through historical sites, documents, judicial records and other forms of national heritage rather than limiting it to textbooks.
He said Lahore held particular historical significance in Bhagat Singh’s life, trial, and execution, making it an appropriate place to commemorate his legacy.
The participants called for preservation of documents relating to Bhagat Singh’s trial and other aspects of his life associated with Lahore and urged that the material be made available for research and educational purposes.
The gathering also unanimously adopted a resolution calling upon the government of Pakistan to consider conferring the Nishan-i-Pakistan on Bhagat Singh in recognition of his historical struggle and sacrifice.
The resolution also urged the Indian government to consider conferring the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, on Bhagat Singh.
According to the resolution, recognition of Bhagat Singh’s legacy could also contribute to promoting the shared historical heritage of the peoples of Pakistan and India, as well as peace, mutual respect, cultural ties and people-to-people contacts.
The participants paid tribute to Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev and others who lost their lives during the freedom struggle.
Bhagat Singh was hanged by British rulers on March 23, 1931, along with his comrades Rajguru and Sukhdev, after being tried on charges of hatching a conspiracy against the British regime. PTI MZ RD RD
