Besides being condemned to their third defeat in a row, Mumbai Indians have been given another major worry in their veteran opener and former captain Rohit Sharma picking up a hamstring injury during the team’s 18-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Wankhede Stadium. Rohit got the start in chase of 241, but was forced to retire hurt when batting on 19 off 13.
He didn’t return to bat as MI fell short of the target by 19 runs on Sunday night.
Later, MI’s top run-scorer of the contest, Sherfane Rutherford, confirmed that Rohit has a hamstring issue without giving any details into the severity of the injury.
“I am not sure about it. It’s a bit of a hamstring. I am not sure; I was in the dugout, so I can’t really give much information on that,”
Rutherford told reporters after the match.
Pandya Warns Underperformers
MI captain Hardik Pandya has hinted that the team may be open to dropping underperformers despite it still being early days in the competition. He says the team ended up conceding “too many” runs with RCB piling on 240 in 20 overs.
“I think we conceded way too many (runs) as well. I think that was always going to be catch-up. I think in the last couple of games, as a bowling unit or even as a batting unit, we’ve been catching up in the game rather than leading the game,” said Pandya while speaking to the broadcasters.
Chasing 241, MI managed 222/5 with Rutherford hitting an unbeaten 31-ball 71.
“We have a couple of days off from here… To be very honest, now a lot of things need to be rethought. Definitely, it’s not working. A couple of games we have won the toss, but maybe we need to see what other options we have as a batting group or bowling group,” Pandya said.
