The Indian government has received formal requests from Bhutan and Morocco to set up offshore campuses of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), sources have told news agency PTI. According to officials familiar with the matter, several countries have shown interest in hosting IIT campuses as India expands its global education footprint.
“We have received requests from multiple countries including Bhutan and Morocco for setting up of IIT’s offshore campuses,” a source told PTI.
To streamline and oversee the process of establishing IIT campuses abroad, the Central government had earlier constituted a 17-member committee. The committee was headed by IIT Council Standing Committee Chairperson Dr K Radhakrishnan and was tasked with
framing guidelines and assessing feasibility for offshore IIT campuses. The panel submitted its recommendations in 2022, paving the way for India’s first IIT campus outside the country.
Following the committee’s recommendations, IIT Madras launched the country’s first offshore IIT campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The IIT Madras-Zanzibar campus became the first IIT to be established outside India and is fully managed by IIT Madras. Notably, it is also the first IIT with a woman Director, Preeti Aghalyam. Under her leadership, the campus was launched in November 2023 and is currently operating from a temporary campus.
Soon after, IIT Delhi became the second IIT to expand overseas by setting up its offshore campus in the United Arab Emirates. The IIT Delhi–Abu Dhabi campus, located in Khalifa City, was officially inaugurated on September 2, 2024.

Meanwhile, preparations are also underway for a third offshore IIT campus, which is expected to come up in Nigeria next year. In October 2025, the Federal Government of Nigeria held discussions with the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, His Excellency Abhishek Singh, to explore collaboration for setting up an IIT campus.
“Nigeria and India are deepening educational cooperation as plans advance for the establishment of the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus in Nigeria,” the Federal Ministry of Education said in a post on X. “The proposed IIT Nigeria campus, to be hosted at the Federal Government Academy, Suleja, will advance science, technology, and innovation education.”
