Cervical cancer is a preventable disease, yet many women continue to be diagnosed with and die from, it each year because it is often detected at a late stage. Cervical cancer typically takes time to develop and usually does not present symptoms until the disease has progressed, making regular screening essential. Abnormal changes in the cervix can be identified early and treated appropriately with a simple screening test, before they develop into cervical cancer.
Dr. Sravan Bodpudi, Consultant, Medical Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant Physician, Manipal Hospital, Vijayawada, shares everything you need to know:
Persistent infection with specific types of HPV (Human Papillomavirus), which is mainly acquired through skin-to-skin contact, is the
primary cause of cervical cancer. While some HPV infections clear naturally over time, others may lead to cervical disease. If these changes are left untreated, they can eventually develop into cervical cancer. The earlier these changes are detected, the easier it is to provide proper treatment and prevent the progression to cancer. Routine screening enables healthcare providers to detect abnormalities well before a woman experiences any signs or symptoms of the disease.
The screening procedure is fast, safe, and often painless. However, many women delay or avoid it due to fear, often caused by a lack of information, social stigma, or other reasons. Despite this, early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and overall survival. Every woman should begin cervical screening at the age of 21 and undergo screening once every three years. Women are encouraged to consult their healthcare provider regarding when to start screening and how frequently it should be done, based on age and medical history.
Awareness and regular screening, combined with preventive care, can have a life-changing impact. Taking just a few moments to undergo a basic screening test can help identify issues early and create lasting positive effects on your health and life.
