During his visit to the Netherlands, Prime Minister Narendra Modi oversaw a landmark agreement between Dutch technology giant ASML and Tata Electronics to support India’s first front-end semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat.
This collaboration is seen as a major step in establishing a robust domestic chip-making ecosystem in India. A key question to this deal is why these semiconductors are so important for India. Let us take a look at the technological and strategic impact of this.
Semiconductors are at the heart of the modern economy, from AI and defence to telecom, automobiles, and advanced manufacturing. The world’s biggest technology companies are investing in India because they see political stability, decisive leadership,
skilled talent and a rapidly expanding infrastructure ecosystem.
Why TATA-ASML Semiconductor Manufacturing Deal Is Important for India?
Semiconductors are critical for India as they power everything from smartphones and laptops to defence systems, electric vehicles, telecom networks and AI. India currently imports most of its chips, making the country vulnerable to global supply disruptions and rising costs. By building a domestic semiconductor ecosystem, India aims to reduce import dependence, strengthen national security and boost manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
In addition, this sector is also expected to create high-skilled jobs and attract global investments. With growing demand for electronics, AI, 5G and electric mobility, semiconductors are seen as key to India’s long-term economic and technological growth.
Earlier in the day, while speaking to media, Christophe Foquet, Chief Executive Officer of ASML, said, “Semiconductors have become a clear priority for India, and Tata is the company set to build the country’s first semiconductor fab. I think this project is extremely important, and through this MoU, we want to provide Tata companies
with all the support ASML can offer in terms of products, technology, and people to ensure they have the very best lithography solutions for the first fab.”
Praising PM Modi’s leadership, BJP’s national information & technology department in charge, Amit Malviya, on X said, “When the CEO of the world’s most important semiconductor company speaks about partnering with India, it is not merely a business decision; it is a recognition of India’s rise as a trusted global technology and manufacturing powerhouse.”
“For decades, India was seen as a market. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India is now being seen as a strategic partner, an innovation hub and a critical pillar in global supply chains,” he added.
“Semiconductors are at the heart of the modern economy, from AI and defence to telecom, automobiles and advanced manufacturing. The world’s biggest technology companies are investing in India because they see political stability, decisive leadership, skilled talent and a rapidly expanding infrastructure ecosystem. India is no longer waiting at the periphery of the global technology order. It is helping shape it,” he added.
