Nepal Soldiers Crawl Through Thick Mud To Rescue People Trapped In Trishuli Tunnel | Video

As Nepal struggles with one of its biggest flood crises, the Army is running a large-scale operation to rescue people stranded under mud and debris in the aftermath of the catastrophe.

At least 579 people have died in Nepal and seven in Tibet, while more than 2,400 remain missing on both sides of the border, after a devastating flood erupted in the Bhote Koshi River and tore through villages along the Nepal-Tibet border.

In one of the striking moments, an Army helicopter was seen hovering right above damaged buildings to rescue those trapped on top of them. The chopper, as shown in the clip, was manoeuvring at low altitude over the destroyed building as flood debris surrounded the settlement.

Said ‘No’ To Search-And-Rescue Help Offers From India, China And Others

Another clip showed an Army helicopter rescuing a man from above the rooftop of a damaged building after he repeatedly waved towards the chopper, calling for help.

A third clip showed how the Nepalese Army rescued people who were trapped inside the Upper Trishuli Hydropower tunnel after the flooding in the Rasuwa district. While the majority of those trapped inside the tunnel were workers, a number of tourists were also among the stranded.

The video showed two soldiers crawling into the tunnel as they fought through  the thick, muddy surface outside to rescue those trapped.

Nepal Battles Its Worst Crisis In Recent Years 

With nearly 600 dead and thousands missing, Nepal is battling its worst crisis in recent years following a glacial collapse that unleashed a torrent of water, ice, rock and debris through the Himalayas earlier this week.

As many as 1,924 people remain missing in Nepal, with 558 in Tibet including more than 540 foreign nationals. The tally also includes Hindu pilgrims from India. Earlier, India said 84 nationals have been rescued, 149 have crossed safely into Nepal from China, around 400 remain safe in China, while about 320 Indians are still missing or uncontactable.

According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 14,829 security personnel have been mobilised for search and rescue operations. So far, 3,742 people have been rescued and brought to safety.
