Ranchi, Jun 27 (PTI) The Jharkhand government has established contact with 34 migrant workers stranded in Kannigaipair village in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu after an ammonia gas leak in their company to ensure their safe return to their home districts, an official said on Saturday.
Team leader of the state migrant control cell, Shikha Lakra, told PTI that following the directive from Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, they had established contact with the migrant workers who had, through a video, expressed their desire to return to their home districts in Jharkhand after the ammonia gas leak in their company.
“A total of 36 migrant workers from different districts of Jharkhand were working in the seafood export company in Tiruvallur
district, and out of which one migrant identified as Priti Devi (29) from Dhanbad had died in the ammonia gas leak while another worker Kodama Pira is undergoing treatment. We are arranging for the return of the remaining 34 workers through the railway to their respective districts,” said Lakra.
An ammonia gas leak had taken place on Sunday at a seafood export company in Tiruvallur district where the migrant workers were employed. The incident led to the death of 14 workers and several being treated for toxic gas inhalation.
A social outfit Jharkhand Janadhikar Mahasabha had shared a video of the migrant workers requesting help to return to their native districts in Jharkhand on a social media platform and tagged it to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Saturday.
The chief minister had directed the migrant cell to immediately ensure safe return of the migrant workers. PTI ANB RG
