Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, from November 21 to 23, where he will present India’s perspectives on the G20 agenda, the Ministry of External
Affairs (MEA) said in a statement released Wednesday.
PM Modi will speak in all three formal sessions of the summit, where he will outline India’s views on inclusive and sustainable growth, global resilience on climate and disaster risks, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and critical minerals. The sessions he will address are:
- Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth – Leaving No One Behind: Building resilient economies, the role of trade, financing for development and the global debt burden.
- A Resilient World – The G20’s Contribution: Disaster risk reduction, climate change, just energy transitions and strengthening food systems.
- A Fair and Just Future for All: Critical minerals, decent work and the role of artificial intelligence.
The MEA said this will be the fourth consecutive G20 Summit hosted in the Global South. The sequence began when Indonesia chaired the Bali G20 Summit in 2022, handing the presidency to India.
India hosted the Summit in 2023, which marked a major milestone with the African Union’s inclusion as a permanent member of the grouping. The presidency then passed to Brazil, which hosted the Rio Summit in 2024.
South Africa now holds the 2025 presidency, continuing the Global South leadership streak.
Collectively, G20 nations represent around 80% of global GDP, 75% of global trade and 60% of the world’s population, underscoring the weight of these back-to-back presidencies in emerging economies.
IBSA Meeting
The ministry said PM Modi will also hold bilateral meetings with several leaders in Johannesburg. He is scheduled to attend the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Meeting hosted by South Africa.
The India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Dialogue Forum is a trilateral platform bringing together three major democracies and emerging economies from Asia, South America and Africa. Established in 2003, IBSA focuses on cooperation in trade, development, defence, governance and wider South-South collaboration. The grouping also coordinates positions on global issues, advocates UN reforms including expansion of the Security Council, and jointly finances development projects in poorer nations through the UN-administered IBSA Fund.
