The Indian Coast Guard’s first indigenously designed and built pollution control vessel, Samudra Pratap, will be commissioned on Monday, January 5. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will commission the vessel at Goa Shipyard Limited, officials said on Sunday.
What we know about the vessel?
Samudra Pratap is the first pollution control vessel (PCV) of its kind to be designed and built in India for the Indian Coast Guard. The ship has more than 60 per cent indigenous content, marking a major step in domestic shipbuilding.
The vessel is 114.5 metres long and weighs around 4,200 tonnes, making it the largest ship in the Indian Coast Guard fleet. It can sail at a speed of over 22 knots and has an endurance of about 6,000 nautical miles.
The ship will play a key role in enforcing marine
pollution control laws. It is designed to respond to oil spills and chemical pollution at sea and will strengthen India’s ability to protect its maritime environment.
Samudra Pratap will also support maritime law enforcement, search and rescue missions, and operations within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The vessel is equipped with advanced systems for oil spill detection and recovery, chemical detection, and separation of oil and water.
It features modern bridge and platform management systems and has firefighting capabilities certified under FiFi-2 and FFV-2 standards. The ship is also fitted with dynamic positioning capability.
Strengthening coastal security
In addition to pollution control, the vessel is armed with a 30mm CRN-91 gun and two 12.7mm remote-controlled guns. These features will help the Coast Guard carry out patrol and security duties more effectively.
The commissioning of Samudra Pratap is seen as an important boost to India’s maritime preparedness and supports the country’s push towards greater self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
