Instagram’s new Replace Audio tool lets users change music on published feed posts and carousels without losing their existing likes, comments or shares.
Instagram has introduced a feature that allows users to replace the music attached to previously published feed posts and carousels. The update removes the need to delete and re-upload content simply to change its soundtrack.
The new Replace Audio option keeps a post’s existing likes, comments, shares and other engagement intact. Instagram says the tool is intended to give users and creators greater control over content after it has been published.
The feature is beginning to reach users through the Instagram mobile app. Its availability may vary by account, app version or region during the rollout.
Instagram Adds Replace Audio Tool
Previously, users could not normally change the music selected for a photo or carousel after publishing it. Deleting and re-uploading was the main workaround, but doing so removed the original post’s engagement and publication history.
Replace Audio addresses that limitation by allowing the soundtrack to be edited independently. The photos, caption, tags and engagement associated with the post remain in place.
The option could be useful if a selected track no longer suits the post, becomes unavailable or needs to be replaced for creative reasons. Creators and brands may also use it to update older content with a different song without rebuilding the post from the beginning.
How to Replace Music on an Instagram Post
Open Instagram and navigate to the published feed post or carousel whose music you want to change. Tap the two-line menu in the upper-right corner and select Edit.
Look for the Replace Audio option and tap it to open Instagram’s music library. Select a new track, choose the section of the song you want to use and save the changes.
The menus may look slightly different depending on the phone and Instagram app version. Users who do not see the option should check for an app update, although updating may not provide immediate access during a phased rollout.
What Happens to Existing Engagement?
Changing the audio does not create a separate post. Existing likes, comments, shares and other engagement should remain attached to the original upload.
The feature applies to published feed posts and carousels with music. Instagram has not indicated that it provides unrestricted editing of original sound embedded within an uploaded video.
Music availability can also differ between personal, creator and business accounts because of licensing restrictions. A song available when the post was created may not remain available in every country or for every account type.
