Surat has long held a reputation for being the wild west of fusion. But its latest creation, the Aam Ras Cheese Dosa, might have finally pushed the internet to its breaking point.
What started as a summer video by food blogger Vatsal Jariwala (@thefoodiecam) has morphed into a full-scale digital debate after being shared on X by Mohammed Futurewala. And as expected, the internet is divided between those who admire the audacity and those who believe “some dishes go to Surat to die.”
The viral video showcases a classic dosa being spread on a tawa, but instead of the traditional potato masala, the vendor pours a generous amount of thick, vibrant Aam Ras (mango pulp) directly onto the crepe. To top it off, a heavy helping of cheese is added, creating
a sweet, salty, and fermented combination that has left foodies scratching their heads. Not to forget a generous drizzle of dhaniya (coriander) to really tie in the flavour together.

‘Surat Is A Food Graveyard’: Netizens React
The reaction on X (formerly Twitter) was swift and merciless. While some found the invention “brave,” others were less than impressed with the fusion of South Indian staples and Gujarati summer delicacies. One user pointed out the obvious, stating, “This is a sweet crepe, not a dosa.”
A protective local urged people not to blame the entire state: “DO NOT generalize all Gujaratis with what Surati do. lolz.” On the other hand, another critic was far more blunt, commenting, “Surat is a food graveyard. So many dishes died there.”

Referencing the street food trend of putting cheese on everything, one user joked, “There was potential to add another cheese block. Wasted.” Despite the vitriol, some found humour in the city’s relentless pursuit of the next big thing. One commenter quipped, “Believe me, the way Surati do invention in food, if they did the same for space, we’d have another NASA.”
