Latur, Sept 1 (PTI) The police in Maharashtra’s Latur district launched a helmet enforcement drive on Tuesday, booking 787 two-wheeler riders for riding without protective headgear and collecting Rs 7.87 lakh in fines on the first day, officials said.
Police said awareness campaigns on helmet use had been conducted since March through various platforms. Despite repeated appeals to motorists, helmet compliance remained below expectations, prompting the department to begin strict enforcement from September 1.
Officials said the campaign was not aimed merely at collecting fines but at preventing deaths and serious injuries in road accidents. The drive will continue until helmet compliance reaches 100 per cent among two-wheeler riders in the district,
