Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a three-day visit to the Republic of South Africa on Friday, where he will participate in the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit. The Summit, which is being hosted by South Africa for
the first time, will be held in Johannesburg.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit comes at the invitation of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
In a departure statement issued before boarding his flight, the Prime Minister underscored the significance of this year’s Summit, calling it “particularly special” as it marks the first-ever G20 Summit hosted on African soil.
“I am visiting the Republic of South Africa from 21-23 November, 2025 at the invitation of H.E. Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa, to attend the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit being held in Johannesburg under South Africa’s Presidency. This will be a particularly special Summit given that it would be the first G20 Summit being held in Africa. During India’s Presidency of the G20 in 2023, the African Union had become a member of the G20,” PM Modi said in his departure statement.
The moment also reflects Africa’s rising global profile, especially after the African Union became a full member of the G20 during India’s presidency in 2023.
PM Modi noted that the Summit, themed “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability,” builds on the outcomes of previous G20 meetings held in New Delhi and Rio de Janeiro. He said he would present India’s perspective at the Summit framed by the philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and and ‘One earth, One Family and One future.’
The Summit is expected to deliberate on a range of key global issues.
During his visit, the PM will also attend the 6th IBSA Summit, where leaders of India, Brazil, and South Africa will discuss strengthening trilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Additionally, he expressed enthusiasm for engaging with the vibrant Indian diaspora in South Africa, one of the largest and most influential Indian-origin communities anywhere in the world. The Prime Minister is scheduled to address members of the Indian community at a special event.
