Pilibhit, Aug 28 (PTI) A 60-year-old farmer was mauled to death by a tiger that was allegedly lying in wait in a banana field in Pilibhit district on Friday night, police said.
Munshi Prasad, a resident of Shantinagar village, had gone to guard his banana field around 8 pm when the tiger attacked him, leaving him fatally injured, they said.
When he did not return home, his family members searched for him with villagers and found his blood-soaked body in the field, police said.
Angry villagers later placed the body at Ramnagar Tiraha and blocked the road, demanding compensation for the family and adequate measures to protect villagers from wildlife.
They alleged that tigers and leopards had been frequently spotted in the area and that the Forest
Department had been informed several times, but adequate surveillance and safety measures had not been put in place.
Puranpur Circle Officer Vidhi Bhushan Maurya said the incident was being investigated. Police and administrative officials reached the spot and persuaded the protesters to clear the road.
The delay in the arrival of the Forest Department team had further angered the villagers, officials said. PTI COR KIS NB NB
