Kolkata, Jun 6 (PTI) A second-year student of the Kolkata Medical College drowned in the Hooghly river at Babughat here on Saturday, a senior police officer said.
The deceased was identified as Shyamal Basak (24), a resident of Konnagar in Hooghly district.
Preliminary investigation suggests that Basak was swept away by strong currents, while bathing in the river around 3 am, the officer said.
His friend took him to the nearby Sutanuti Police Outpost.
“Personnel of the Kolkata Police’s Disaster Management Group (DMG) launched a search operation in the area. He was fished out after a two-hour effort,” the officer said.
Basak, who had participated in the protests over the rape and murder of the on-duty doctor at RG Kar hospital here in 2024, was taken
to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
A post-mortem examination would be conducted to determine the exact cause of death, though preliminary assessment suggests death due to drowning and suffocation. PTI SCH RBT
