'Today I Saw Two Sides Of India': German Tourist Allegedly Charged Rs 4500 For 30-Minute Rickshaw Ride In Delhi; Internet Reacts

A now-viral X post has sparked a heated debate online after recounting the experience of a German tourist who was allegedly charged an inflated amount during his Delhi trip.

According to the viral post shared by a user named Ramanand, the traveller from Germany had recently arrived in Delhi and was keen on exploring the city beyond luxury hotels and expensive tourist spots.

Instead, he reportedly wanted to experience the “real side” of India, its old streets, local food and bustling markets that are often celebrated online by travel creators and vloggers.

The incident allegedly took place near the historic Jama Masjid area, where the tourist was approached by an e-rickshaw driver offering him a “full market tour” at what was described as a “cheap”

price. The tourist agreed and spent around 30 minutes travelling through crowded lanes, decorated markets and famous food streets in Old Delhi.

However, according to the post, the situation changed once the ride ended. The driver allegedly demanded Rs 4,500 for the short tour, leaving the tourist shocked. The post claimed the driver justified the amount by calling it a “special foreigner tour.”

The post further mentioned that an elderly tea seller nearby had quietly observed the interaction before stepping in. He reportedly explained the actual fare to the tourist and confronted the driver, saying, “Visitors come here to collect memories, not bad experiences.”

Before leaving, the tourist allegedly remarked, “Today I saw two sides of India… one trying to take advantage of me, and another trying to protect me.”

While the post gained significant traction online, some users pointed out discrepancies in the claim. Several social media users noted that the original video circulating online allegedly showed the rickshaw driver asking for Rs 2,000 instead of Rs 4,500 for a 5-minute rickshaw ride.

The post nevertheless sparked a broader conversation online about tourist experiences and pricing transparency.

Reacting to the viral story, one user wrote, “That is absolutely right. Some people just try to rob tourists in the pursuit of earning money, as if there is no attachment to the country. But it is heartening to see those who truly love their country, who come forward and help without any selfishness. The real India resides in these good people.”

Another commented, “Tourists rarely remember exact prices years later — but they always remember whether a place made them feel welcomed or exploited.”
