Albinder Dhindsa, the co-founder and long-time leader of quick-commerce platform Blinkit, has been named the new chief executive officer of Eternal, the parent company of Zomato, marking a significant leadership change in India’s on-demand delivery ecosystem. Dhindsa is best known as the co-founder and CEO of Blinkit, one of India’s fastest-growing quick-commerce platforms, previously known as Grofers. Born in Patiala, Punjab, he studied engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, and later earned an MBA from Columbia Business School in the United States, laying
the foundation for a career in technology and logistics.
From Grofers to Blinkit: The Quick-Commerce Pioneer
Dhindsa’s entrepreneurial journey began with the founding of Grofers in 2013, alongside Saurabh Kumar. Initially set up as a hyperlocal delivery service connecting neighbourhood shops with customers, Grofers evolved into a full-stack online grocery platform. In 2021, the company rebranded as Blinkit, pivoting aggressively to the quick-commerce model that promised grocery and essentials delivery in as little as 10 minutes, a strategy that reshaped consumer expectations in India’s fast-moving delivery space.
Under Dhindsa’s leadership, Blinkit established a network of micro-fulfilment centres and dark stores across major cities, positioning the company as a key player in the highly competitive instant delivery market. In 2022, Blinkit was acquired by Zomato in an all-stock deal valued at about $568 million, making it a core part of the broader delivery ecosystem alongside food delivery and other services.
A Strategic Leadership Shift
Dhindsa’s elevation to CEO at Eternal reflects the increasing importance of quick commerce and hyperlocal logistics within the group’s longer-term strategy. Blinkit has not only driven significant volume growth but has also become one of the most valuable verticals in the combined entity.
His leadership style has been tested in the post-acquisition phase, with founder Deepinder Goyal previously acknowledging a challenging integration period. In public remarks, Goyal revealed that he had at times considered asking Dhindsa to step down from his Blinkit role during the early years of integration, a testament to the intensity of operational expectations as the businesses converged.
Industry Standing and Vision
As CEO of Eternal, Dhindsa will now oversee not just Blinkit but the entire suite of businesses under the group, including Zomato’s core food delivery business, cloud kitchens, grocery delivery and other ventures. His deep experience in rapid delivery logistics, technology deployment and customer-centric innovation is expected to shape strategic priorities at the group level.
Dhindsa’s role also highlights how quick commerce has emerged from a niche segment to a mainstream pillar of India’s digital economy, one where speed, operational efficiency and network scale are critical differentiators.
Albinder Dhindsa is married to Zomato’s co-founder and ex-CPO Akriti Chopra.
