Ahead of the Indian men’s selection committee meeting in Mumbai on Saturday, Shreyas Iyer has reportedly been asked to be present for discussions at the BCCI headquarters. The development all but confirms that Iyer is set to be named India’s new T20I captain and will take charge from the tour of the UK, which begins later this month.
According to a report in The Indian Express, the BCCI has approved Iyer‘s appointment as T20I captain, with a formal announcement expected later today.
“Iyer will be formally declared as captain on Saturday, and he will be leading the Indian T20I team in Ireland and England. The selection committee had sent their new captain’s name to the decision makers in the Indian board, and they have approved Iyer as the new skipper,”
a BCCI source was quoted as saying by the daily.
Selectors TO Drop Suryakumar
Months after leading India to the ICC T20 World Cup title, Suryakumar Yadav is reportedly set to lose not only the captaincy but also his place in the squad. The selection panel, headed by Ajit Agarkar, has apparently decided against considering Suryakumar going forward, with the decision already communicated to the top-order batter.
Reports suggest that Suryakumar’s prolonged slump in form has been a major concern for the selectors, who were waiting for IPL 2026 to conclude before taking a final call.
Iyer’s Era To Begin In Ireland?
Iyer last played a T20I for India in December 2023. Although he was included in the squad for the home series against New Zealand earlier this year, he did not feature in a single match.
The Mumbai batter has been in impressive form over the past few seasons and has repeatedly demonstrated his leadership credentials across both the IPL and domestic cricket. He guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 before joining Punjab Kings and leading them to the final in 2025.
India will play two T20Is in Ireland later this month before travelling to England for a five-match T20I series.
