Suriya has opened up about the financial struggles faced during the making of Karuppu despite the film now becoming a major box-office success. The actor spoke candidly about the production difficulties during the film’s success meet in Chennai. Karuppu faced release issues and last-minute show cancellations before eventually going on to gross over Rs 200 crore worldwide. Despite mixed reviews, the fantasy courtroom drama turned into a commercial success and is now the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026. At the film’s success event in Chennai,
Suriya admitted he was overwhelmed by the audience response. “Karuppu was decided in 30-45 minutes. I’ve never signed a film that quickly in recent times. I’ve also never seen this kind of response for my films in recent years. It’s receiving unanimous love worldwide,” he said. The actor added that seeing packed theatres across different age groups made the success even more emotional for him. “From kids to elders, the housefull board pics make me very happy.” Suriya reveals production faced money problems During the interaction, Suriya also revealed that the makers continued filming additional portions even while facing serious financial pressure. He specifically spoke about a climax song that was added late into production after the edit had already been locked. “We shot that climax song five months after locking the edit. Even after filming was completed, one of the assistants suggested adding a song dedicated to Karuppasamy despite the financial hurdles,” he revealed. Karuppu was originally scheduled to release on May 14, but several shows were cancelled at the last minute after dues to distributors reportedly remained unpaid. The film finally released on May 15 after the issues were resolved. About Karuppu Karuppu stars Suriya alongside Trisha Krishnan and RJ Balaji. The cast also includes Indrans, Anagha Maya Ravi, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika, Sshivada and Supreeth Reddy. The film follows Karuppuswamy, who disguises himself as Advocate Saravanan to fight against a corrupt legal system. At the success meet, Suriya also hinted at the possibility of expanding the Karuppu universe further, though no official sequel announcement has been made yet.
