Poland Neutralises Drone Over Government Buildings, Two Belarusians Detained

Poland’s State Protection Service (SOP) on Monday night neutralised a drone that was flying over sensitive government locations in Warsaw. Prime Minister Donald Tusk shared the development on X, amid ongoing regional tensions following recent airspace violations.

The drone was spotted by two employees of Poland’s State Protection Services working at the Belvedere castle, where the president resides. Two Belarusian citizens were detained in connection with the incident and police have launched an investigation into the incident.

investigating the circumstances of the incident.”

Col. Boguslaw Piorkowski told AP that the drone was not shot down, it landed after Polish authorities nabbed its operators. He also added that the drone didn’t fly in from abroad.

“The impression is that this is not something that flew in” from abroad but rather launched locally,” Katarzyna Pelczynska-Nalecz, Poland’s minister of development funds and regional policy told TVN 24.

Poland, a NATO alliance, is already on alert after multiple Russian drones breached their airspace. However, Russia denied Poland’s claim and called it a “deliberate provocation” by Ukraine.

Poland reacted sharply to Russia’s breach and called it “irresponsible”. NATO fighter jets and air defenses shot down the drones, which were not armed.

Poland’s foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski remarked that NATO states should consider imposing a no-fly zone over Ukraine to protect the alliance’s territory and people from Russian drones.

Sikorski told the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine: “We as NATO and the EU could be capable of doing this, but it is not a decision that Poland can make alone; it can only be made with its allies.”
