Etah (UP), Jul 20 (PTI) A 25-year-old man was arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Etah district after villagers alleged that he had slaughtered a cow and was preparing to kill another, police said on Monday.
Police said animal remains were recovered from the accused’s house in Achalpur village on Sunday and have been preserved for forensic and veterinary examination to determine the species.
Circle Officer (Sadar) Sankalpdeep Kushwaha said the accused, identified as Toshim, sustained a leg injury while allegedly trying to escape by jumping from the roof and has been admitted to the Etah Medical College for treatment.
According to police, villagers alleged that a cow had already been slaughtered and preparations were underway to slaughter another when they
intervened and apprehended the accused before handing him over to police.
The officer said a case has been registered under relevant provisions of law and further legal action will be taken based on the forensic and veterinary reports.
The incident triggered tension in the village, with residents expressing anger over the alleged cow slaughter. Police were maintaining a vigil in the area.
The Uttar Pradesh Cow Slaughter Prevention Act prohibits the slaughter of cows and their progeny. PTI CORR ABN RT
