Ghaziabad (UP), Jun 10 (PTI) A special surveillance and survey campaign has been launched in 12 urban primary health centre areas of Ghaziabad after a sewage sample from the Dundahera STP tested positive for vaccine-derived poliovirus Type-1, officials said on Wednesday.
Chief Medical Officer Sachin said the poliovirus was detected in a sewage sample collected from the Dundahera pumping station, which was vaccine-derived and non-virulent, adding that there was no possibility of any serious harm.
“The oral polio vaccine contains a live but weakened virus, which can be detected in some circumstances,” he said.
“There is no need to panic,” the CMO said.
The situation was being monitored in coordination with the state and Central governments and the World
Health Organization (WHO), he added.
The health department has identified 12 affected and adjoining areas for an extensive survey, covering around 1.25 lakh people.
More than 107 health teams have been deployed for door-to-door screening of children up to five years of age, he added. PTI KIS ARI
