Chennai and several parts of Tamil Nadu witnessed widespread rainfall on Tuesday, prompting authorities to declare a holiday for schools in Chennai on Wednesday.
Shortly after Chennai, schools and colleges
in Chengalpattu district and other parts of the state were also declared a holiday on Wednesday.
Tuesday’s heavy downpour resulted in waterlogging across several low-lying areas, disrupting daily life for residents and commuters. In Tambaram Sanatorium, a subway was inundated, with videos circulating on social media showing people wading through sewage-laden water.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), while most parts of Tamil Nadu are expected to receive less than 50 mm of rainfall, some areas saw significantly higher levels. Ramanathapuram recorded 149 mm of rain, Nagapattinam 90 mm, and parts of Chennai received around 63.5 mm, as per IMD’s latest report.
The weather department also forecast heavy to very heavy rain in isolated places across districts including Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore.
Similar conditions are expected in the Union Territories of Puducherry and Karaikal, with thunderstorms and lightning likely in some places.
As a precautionary measure and to ensure public safety, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin visited parts of south Chennai earlier today to inspect ongoing infrastructure development aimed at improving water drainage. This includes deepening and widening canals, constructing covered concrete channels, and desilting work near estuarine outlets.
During his visit, Udhayanidhi reviewed work at the Okkiam Madhavi canal—currently underway at a cost of Rs 27 crore—and also inspected desilting activities in the Kannagi Nagar area, according to an official statement.
