New Delhi, Nov 3 (PTI) Material science technology major Corning’s new optical connectivity manufacturing facility in Pune has become operational, the company said on Tuesday.
The plant is co-located with Corning’s existing optical fibre plant.
“With this facility now operational and additional capacity expected to come online in 2027, Corning is building on its established presence in India and enhancing its ability to serve customers. This announcement reflects our long-term commitment to India and to supporting the continued development of its digital infrastructure,” said Sudhir Pillai, Managing Director- India, Middle East and Africa, Corning.
The US-based materials science major is credited with having created the world’s first low-cost optical
fibre for long-distance communication.
The launch of the new facility coincides with the 157th Anniversary of Corning. It manufactures optical connectivity products for data center and telecommunications network applications.
The new facility is part of Corning’s strategy to address connectivity requirements of hyperscalers.
This is the fourth manufacturing facility of Corning in India. In 2012, Corning invested more than USD 100 million to establish its optical fibre manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune.
Recent additions to Corning’s India manufacturing footprint include a pharmaceutical glass packaging joint venture with SGD Pharma in Telangana, inaugurated in September 2025, and a Corning Gorilla Glass cover-glass finishing joint venture with Optiemus Infracom near Chennai, inaugurated in December 2025.
The operationalisation of the optical connectivity plant builds on Corning’s longstanding presence in India and supports the company’s ability to serve customers in the region with optical connectivity solutions.
“The start of operations at the India facility marks an important milestone for Corning’s global manufacturing network. By expanding its optical connectivity manufacturing presence in India, Corning is strengthening its ability to serve customers’ evolving connectivity requirements,” Pillai said.
The announcement aligns with the company’s growth plan as outlined in its Springboard Plan.
Corning recently shared its plan to grow sales to an annualised run rate of USD 20 billion by the end of 2026, USD 30 billion by the end of 2028, and USD 40 billion by 2030, while growing earnings faster than sales and delivering significantly higher returns on invested capital and substantially more free cash flow.
