Sam Konstas burst into prominence during the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy, marking his debut with a confident half-century against a formidable Indian attack featuring Jasprit Bumrah — smacking the star pacer with an outrageous ramp.
His aggressive style and composure under pressure drew praise, while fiery on-field exchanges with Virat Kohli and later Bumrah also pushed him into the spotlight.
Failed To Score Since
The early promise, however, did not translate into sustained success. After the West Indies tour, Konstas struggled for consistency, managing only 103 runs across nine subsequent Test innings at an average of 16.30.
Although he frequently made starts, he failed to convert them into substantial scores, and similar problems surfaced in Sheffield Shield cricket.
Consequently, the 20-year-old was omitted from the latest central contracts list announced on Wednesday.
Is There A Way Back?
Australia’s chairman of selectors, George Bailey, stressed that Sam Konstas remains firmly in their plans, describing him as a developing player for whom fluctuations are normal.
“Nothing’s really changed in terms of the fact that the man is on a journey,” Bailey said. “Is he highly talented? Yes. Is he on a journey to become a complete and better player? Yes, as all players are. I thought we saw some promising signs towards the back end [of the season], he was consistently getting starts.
“At the start of the season there was a lot of chopping and changing around technique and methods at different times. It looked like that was settling and he was starting to find his feet.
“There were positives out of the fact he was getting consistent starts across those Shield games. He remains a player that we’re incredibly interested in. We’ve got an Australia A trip to India later in the year. I imagine as it stands at the moment, he’s a strong chance to be a part of that.”
Opportunities remain, as uncontracted players can still earn upgrades through consistent international appearances over the next year. With a packed red-ball schedule looming—including series against Bangladesh, South Africa, New Zealand and India, plus a possible World Test Championship final and an away Ashes tour — Konstas will have ample chances to press his case for a recall.
