Heavy rainfall battered the Mumbai-Pune ghat section on Monday, triggering landslides that disrupted both road and rail connectivity between the two cities.
Dramatic videos from the newly opened Missing Link section of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway captured water cascading down rocky tunnel walls and debris clearance operations after a landslide forced authorities to shut the affected stretch.
The visuals also showed the scale of water flow inside the tunnel and the challenging conditions under which restoration teams are working.
The first visuals are from the tunnel on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s Missing Link connector, where water can be seen flowing down the rocky walls following incessant rainfall.

of the landslide on the affected stretch.
The landslide occurred near the exit of Tunnel 2 on the Pune-to-Mumbai carriageway of the Khopoli-Kusgaon Missing Link alignment amid extremely heavy rainfall.
Authorities immediately launched restoration efforts while restricting traffic movement through the area.
Another video showed flooding in the Patalganga River after water accumulated near Khalapur Food Mall on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

TRAFFIC DIVERTED AS LANDSLIDE HITS MISSING LINK
According to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), traffic on the Pune-to-Mumbai carriageway was diverted from 4 am on Monday as a precautionary measure to ensure commuter safety.
In a statement, the MSRDC said, “There is a landslide near the tunnel 2 exit of the Pune to Mumbai lane of the Pune to Mumbai Connecting Link Road, amidst extremely heavy ongoing rainfall. For safety reasons, the traffic has been diverted since 4 am. We are constantly monitoring the situation in close coordination with the Highway Traffic Police.”
According to PTI, the Missing Link project, which was opened around two months ago, is a 13-km bypass through the Sahyadri mountains.
The alignment reduces the Mumbai-Pune journey by around 6 km and cuts travel time by 25 to 30 minutes.
Highway Traffic Police also said traffic movement on the Khandala Ghat section of the expressway had been affected due to waterlogging and the landslide.
HEAVY RAIN ALSO DISRUPTS RAIL SERVICES
The heavy rainfall also impacted railway operations in the Mumbai-Pune ghat section.
According to ANI, incessant rain triggered a landslide between Thakurvadi and Monkey Hill Loop Cabin on the Up Main Line in the South East Ghat section between Karjat and Lonavala, leading to cancellations and diversions of several train services.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed the situation and said restoration work was underway despite the continued rainfall.
“Reviewed the situation arising out of heavy landslides and boulders falling onto the railway tracks in the Mumbai-Pune ghat section. The team is fully geared up for restoration. Heavy rainfall is expected today also. Have asked both Western and Central Railway officers to work as one team to ensure early restoration of all train services,” the minister said.
Central Railway cancelled several services, including the Indrayani Express, Deccan Express, Deccan Queen, Sinhagad Express, Pragati Express and multiple Intercity trains, while several long-distance trains were diverted through alternate routes.
The District Information Office appealed to the public to avoid travelling between Pune and Mumbai until further notice, stating that both the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the old Mumbai-Pune Highway had been severely affected due to the landslide and continuous heavy rainfall.
According to ANI, officials said no casualties had been reported in the expressway landslide.
