Hardoi (UP), Jun 15 (PTI) An executive officer of Shahabad Municipal Council was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Vigilance Establishment on Monday for allegedly accepting a Rs 2 lakh bribe from a contractor in exchange for clearing pending payments, officials said.
The officer, Krishna Kumar Sonkar, was arrested during a trap operation conducted in Shahabad after a complaint by contractor Sudesh Kumar Gupta, proprietor of Laxmi Electricals, according to a vigilance department statement.
Gupta alleged that Sonkar had demanded Rs 2 lakh for releasing pending payments related to electrical supply and maintenance work carried out for the municipal body.
The officer had also allegedly threatened to withhold clearance of outstanding bills if the bribe
was not paid, he alleged.
Following the complaint, the Vigilance Establishment carried out a verification inquiry and found the allegations prima facie correct. Based on the findings, a trap was laid on Monday.
The officials said Sonkar was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting Rs 2 lakh in cash from the complainant.
The accused officer has been taken into custody and a case under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered at the Vigilance Establishment police station in Lucknow. PTI COR ABN NB NB
