Self-styled Hindutva social media influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj was detained in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district on Friday. His detention came hours after Delhi Police assured Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) members and other protesters that he would be arrested within 72 hours over the alleged assault of a student activist’s father.
Bhardwaj, who describes himself online as a “Kattar Hindu” and commands a following of roughly 1.8 lakh users, found himself at the centre of an intense political storm after bragging about the physical altercation in a viral podcast interview.
Self-Styled Sanatani Yoddha
Swatantra Bhardwaj is a 21-year-old digital content creator and political commentator known for aggressive right-wing rhetoric across platforms like Instagram and YouTube.
Digital Persona: He promotes himself as a “Sanatani Yoddha” (Sanatani Warrior), frequently posting nationalist commentary and photographs with high-profile political figures.
Controversial History: He gained prominence by attending public rallies and street demonstrations, often engaging in fiery debates with political opponents and activist groups.
The Incriminating Video and Assault Claims
The controversy stems from an incident during a CJP demonstration against paper leaks at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. During a scuffle, Sanjay Kumar—father of student activist Nishu Azad—sustained head injuries after reportedly being struck with an iron bangle (kada).
While police initially treated the matter as a simple injury from a scuffle, a clip from a one-hour YouTube interview went viral, showing Bhardwaj boastfully claiming he had “cracked the skull” of the victim and bragging that political connections helped him avoid jail time. He further claimed to have the support of senior political figures, forcing several ministers and parties to publicly distance themselves.
High-Speed Escape Attempt and Detention
Following massive political backlash—including pressure from Opposition leaders, such as those from the Congress, and a sit-in protest outside Parliament Street police station by CJP co-conveners and MP Chandrashekhar Azad—Delhi Police launched a multi-state manhunt.
Bhardwaj reportedly attempted to evade plainclothes officers by fleeing his home in Naithla village on a motorcycle towards Khurja while wearing a helmet to conceal his identity. Police teams intercepted and detained him near Dhamra Nara village in Bulandshahr. Authorities are evaluating invoking charges under the SC/ST Act, attempted murder, and criminal intimidation following further medical and legal reviews.
