When Aryan Khan made his directorial debut with The Ba*ds of Bollywood, the industry watched with bated breath. The series didn’t just mark Shah Rukh Khan’s son’s arrival as a filmmaker — it announced him as a storyteller with a distinct voice, flair for shock value, and an eye for cinematic precision. Now, actor Mona Singh, who played a pivotal role in the show, is pulling back the curtain on what it was like to work with the young director and film one of the series’ most talked-about sequences.
Mona on Aryan Khan’s Directorial Vision
In a conversation with Zoom while promoting her upcoming film Thodhe Door Thode Paas, Mona Singh praised Aryan Khan’s composure, clarity, and artistic instinct on set. “Aryan was so clear that he wanted it that way,”
she recalled about the show’s gripping climax, where her character’s relationship with Bobby Deol’s Ajay Talwar is revealed. “That slow-motion shot without music and audio worked wonders. Because the moment you see it, you want to go back — you can’t believe what you just saw.”
Mona shared that Aryan’s involvement was total — from framing and blocking to tone and pacing. “He knew exactly how to shoot it. He went with his gut, and I’m so glad he did,” she said.
Recreating “Duniya Haseeno Ka Mela”
One of the most creatively ambitious moments in the series was Aryan’s decision to reimagine the iconic song Duniya Haseeno Ka Mela from Gupt (1997), renamed Sailab in the show. Though Mona wasn’t part of the original track, Aryan asked her to perform as if she were dancing alongside Bobby Deol — and later digitally inserted her into the archival footage.
“I actually danced for the music video,” she revealed. “It was tricky because I had to match the framing of the original song. Even the kiss I gave to Bobby — I was doing that with a man dressed in a full blue costume! I looked at him and thought, ‘Am I really wearing that?’ Aryan kept showing me every move. He’s so sure of what he wants, and his comic timing is excellent.”
“Aryan Is Such a Baby”
Despite his focus and control behind the camera, Mona described Aryan as warm, funny, and grounded on set. “He’s always laughing and cracking jokes. He’d bring food from home and share it with us,” she said, recalling how his enthusiasm kept the energy on set alive. “We tried to make him smile at the premiere, but he didn’t — there’s an image he wants to keep.”
The Scene That Shocked Everyone
After the finale aired, Mona said her phone didn’t stop buzzing. “So many of my friends and producers called me late in the night after watching the last scene. Everyone said, ‘What the hell? Yeh kya hai?’ It was such a crazy climax,” she laughed.
Her favorite moments, though, include a fan-favorite scene between Raghav Juyal and Emraan Hashmi. “That one and the climax — those are my top two,” she said. “When I returned to shoot after a short break, I couldn’t even process what had happened to my character.”
About The Ba***ds of Bollywood
For those who haven’t yet dived into Aryan Khan’s debut, Mona plays Neeta, the mother of aspiring actor Aasmaan Singh (Lakshay Lalwani). The show follows Aasmaan’s affair with Karishma Talwar (Sahher Bamba), the daughter of superstar Ajay Talwar (Bobby Deol) — unaware that he’s actually Ajay’s illegitimate son, born from his affair with background dancer Neeta during the filming of Sailab.
The ensemble cast also features Raghav Juyal, Anya Singh, Rajat Bedi, Manoj Pahwa, and Karan Johar, alongside cameos from industry legends including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, SS Rajamouli, and Emraan Hashmi.
With a mix of satire, shock, and subtext, Aryan Khan’s The Ba*ds of Bollywood is as much a commentary on fame as it is on the chaos of the industry itself — and as Mona Singh’s anecdotes reveal, the making of it was every bit as fascinating as the series.
