A Non-Resident Indian (NRI) who spent nearly a decade in the United States has sparked discussion online after claiming that moving back to India helped “cure” him, both mentally and emotionally.
Sharing a Reddit post, the NRI praised India’s healthcare system while strongly criticising the American model, accusing it of prioritising profit over patient well-being.
In the post, the NRI reflected on his years in the US, where he studied and built his career. “India cured me. Literally and figuratively. I spent 10 years in America. While they were amazing for my education and career, I missed home and my family,” he wrote. News18, however, could not independently verify the authenticity of the post.
The NRI, who worked as a staff data scientist in
the US, said he started facing health issues in 2017. These experiences, he claimed, exposed what he described as the darker side of the American healthcare system, which he said often uses “scary sounding terms and phrases” that can make anxiety-related problems appear far more severe.
In 2018, the individual was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. While he continued to function professionally, he gradually began to question the accuracy of the diagnosis.
Sharing his experience, he wrote, “If I still had schizophrenia, there is no way I could’ve done a degree and a job. People diagnosed with schizophrenia experience vivid, believable hallucinations and delusions.”
After returning to India last year, the NRI sought a second medical opinion at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru, one of the country’s leading psychiatric institutions.
According to the post, a senior psychiatrist informed him that the earlier condition had been in remission for some time.
“He told me that my schizoaffective disorder has been in remission for some time now. What I am diagnosed with now is mood disorder and occasional anxiety,” the Reddit user wrote.
Expressing gratitude towards Indian doctors, the NRI credited the healthcare system for his recovery.
“I have been healed. However, nothing else has altered. It is solely the access to a healthcare system and doctors who genuinely care, rather than viewing me as a source of profit,” he said.
Social Media Reaction
The post received widespread attention on Reddit, with several users praising India’s medical system.
One user commented, “Indian healthcare system is underrated.” Another wrote, “One of the best and affordable too depending on where one gets treated.” A third added, “Correct, India genuinely has some of the best healthcare in the world. I truly appreciate it and praise it everywhere.”
