India's Vishvajit More Wins Bronze At U23 Wrestling World Championships

Indian Greco-Roman wrestler Vishvajit More earned a hard-fought bronze medal in the 55kg category at the U23 Wrestling World Championships on Wednesday, defeating Kazakhstan’s Yerassyl Mmayrbekov 5-4 in a tense

playoff bout.

More, who made the most of his repechage opportunity, earlier dominated Georgia’s Giorgi Kochalidze by technical superiority (9-1) to book his place in the medal match. His gritty win capped off a solid day for India in the Greco-Roman division.

Meanwhile, India’s women wrestlers endured a challenging outing, all bowing out in the opening rounds.

Hanny Kumari (50kg) lost by fall after a spirited contest against Sviatlana Katenka (competing under the UWW flag), with the score tied 4–6 before Katenka sealed the pin.

Diksha Malik (72kg) went down 3-9 to China’s Yuqi Liu, who later exited the tournament, ending Diksha’s repechage hopes.

Priya Malik (76kg) was beaten 0-10 by technical superiority against American Kylie Renee Welker, who has since advanced to the semifinals — leaving Priya’s chances dependent on Welker’s progression.

Among other Indian Greco-Roman competitors, Kunal (60kg) opened with an 8–0 win over Serbia’s Roland Varga, but fell narrowly 2-4 to Israel’s Melkamu Fetene in the quarterfinals. In the 82kg category, Prince suffered a first-round loss by fall to Uzbekistan’s Samandar Bobonazarov.

More’s podium finish adds another medal to India’s growing tally.
