Traffic movement on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway was disrupted after a gas tanker overturned near the Adoshi tunnel in Raigad district on Wednesday, February 3. The incident forced the authorities to take immediate safety measures and halt traffic movement on one of the busiest highways that connects Mumbai and Pune.
According to a report in IANS, the accident took place at around 6:15 PM. The tanker was travelling at high speed when it lost control on the slope near the tunnel and overturned on the road.
Traffic Halted On Mumbai-Pune Expressway After Tanker Overturns
The tanker was carrying propylene gas, which is highly flammable and risky if it comes in contact with heat or sparks. Considering the danger, the police and emergency teams reached
the spot and immediately began safety measures. Traffic towards Mumbai was temporarily shut to ensure the safety of commuters. This also allowed the rescue teams to handle the situation.
Traffic Situation Caught On Camera
Videos from the site have surfaced online. One of the clips, recorded from a passing vehicle, shows workers wearing hazmat suits working near the overturned tanker in an attempt to control the gas leakage. It also captures the overturned tanker lying on the highway while emergency teams remain deployed at the location. In the background, a person can be heard saying, “Abhi leak hora hai wo (The tanker is still leaking).”

Another video from the spot shows gas visibly leaking from the tanker while trucks and heavy vehicles are seen moving slowly on the opposite side of the road. The footage also shows that traffic was halted on the stretch where the tanker had overturned, while movement continued cautiously on the other side of the expressway.
Travellers Share Frustration Over Long Halt
To minimise risk, authorities shifted Mumbai-bound vehicles onto the Pune-bound lane for nearly two kilometres. The disruption left thousands of commuters stuck on the expressway for long hours. Several travellers reportedly remained stranded for over half a day as long queues of vehicles piled up across the highway.
The extended halt created major discomfort for passengers, especially elderly travellers and families with children, who struggled to find basic necessities such as drinking water and restroom facilities during the wait.
Frustrated commuters began sharing their experiences online to highlight the difficulties they faced while being stuck on the expressway.
One user commented, “Hundreds of families are stuck on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway for 6+ HRS with kids & elderly—after a propylene gas tanker overturned at 5 PM near Adoshi Tunnel. No alerts. No guidance. No timelines. This is a serious public safety failure.”

Someone else who didn’t know about the accident shared, “Are you headed towards Pune? I am currently near Khopoli on the old Mumbai-Pune highway, and there seems to be quite a long traffic snarl. I’m jet lagged and it’s probably gonna take another 3 hours till I get home.”

“Stranded on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway due to a CNG truck accident. I’m a lady travelling with two kids—no water, no washroom access, no assistance, traffic not moving at all. Shocked by the careless and inhuman handling. Where are the highway authorities & gatekeepers?” a woman questioned.

Rescue Teams Continue Operations At Site
Officials said multiple emergency units remain deployed at the accident location as efforts continue to secure the tanker and contain the leakage. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) also rushed to the spot.
“A chemical tanker carrying propylene gas overturned near the Adoshi tunnel, leading to a gas leak. Emergency agencies are working on a war footing to control the situation. For safety reasons, traffic movement has been restricted, and motorists are being diverted to alternate routes,” a police official from Khopoli police station in Raigad district said as quoted by Free Press Journal.
Traffic Police Issue Advisory
Traffic authorities have urged motorists heading towards Mumbai to avoid the affected stretch and instead use alternate routes via Chandni Chowk–Tamhini Ghat–Raigad or Ale Phata–Malshej Ghat–Thane. Officials said movement on the expressway will return to normal only after the gas leakage is completely contained and the overturned tanker is safely removed from the road.
