Mumbai, Jul 3 (PTI) A contractor and several workers have been booked in connection with the manhole death in Mumbai’s Saki Naka area, a police official said on Friday.
Saki Naka resident Aslam Isak Shaikh (55) fell into an open manhole on Khairani Road on Thursday morning amid heavy rains in the metropolis.
He was swept into the underground drainage system due to the strong flow of water. After an extensive search by police and civic agencies, including the fire brigade, Shaikh’s body was pulled out from another manhole a short distance away.
As per officials, the manhole, opened for drainage repair work, was concealed by accumulated water. Shaikh’s kin and others had alleged negligence, claiming that no barricades or warning signs had been placed
around the open manhole despite maintenance work underway.
“Based on a complaint from a personnel from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s L Ward, a case has been registered against the contractor and several workers associated with the drainage repair work. Further probe into the case is underway,” the Saki Naka police station official said. PTI ZA BNM
