For decades, jewellery occupied two distinct spaces in the Indian psyche: it was either an heirloom steeped in tradition or an investment tucked away for the future. Generation Z, however, is blurring those boundaries. For a cohort raised on individuality, digital discovery and conscious consumption, jewellery is no longer confined to ceremonial moments or financial planning. Instead, it has become an extension of personal identity.
Today’s young consumers are approaching jewellery much like they approach fashion, through the lens of self-expression. Whether it’s a delicate gold chain layered with streetwear staples or a statement ring worn every day, the emphasis is on pieces that feel personal rather than prescribed.
“Gen Z’s relationship with
jewellery is driven by self-expression rather than convention,” says Sonaal Goel, Co-Founder, Salty. “They are choosing pieces that reflect their individuality, personal style, and everyday lifestyle, making jewellery a part of their daily wardrobe rather than something reserved for special occasions.”
The Rise Of Everyday Luxury
This shift is also influencing what consumers are buying. Traditional markers of value are no longer enough; aesthetics, versatility and wearability have become equally important considerations. Younger shoppers are gravitating towards lightweight silhouettes, modern forms and designs that transition seamlessly from work meetings to weekend plans.
According to Dishi Somani, founder, Dishi’s Designer Jewellery, this generation is far more intentional in its purchasing decisions than many assume. “They don’t buy jewellery only because tradition dictates it,” she explains. “They look for designs that represent their uniqueness, beliefs and lifestyle. At the same time, they pay close attention to quality, craftsmanship and durability.”
The appeal of contemporary jewellery lies in its ability to fit effortlessly into daily life. Rather than reserving precious pieces for milestone occasions, Gen Z is embracing jewellery as a staple of everyday dressing, a finishing touch that feels both personal and practical.
Gold’s New Identity
Perhaps the most surprising evolution lies in Gen Z’s relationship with gold. Despite having access to a wider range of investment avenues than previous generations, young consumers have not abandoned the precious metal. Instead, they are redefining how they engage with it.
“The perception of gold is evolving rather than disappearing,” notes Goel. “Younger consumers are increasingly drawn to lightweight, contemporary designs that they can wear regularly while also viewing them as a long-term asset.”
Somani echoes this sentiment, observing that while gold continues to hold aspirational value, the way it is consumed has changed dramatically. Rather than investing in traditional, occasion-specific pieces, Gen Z is seeking modern interpretations that feel relevant to their personal style while retaining their intrinsic worth.
Beyond Adornment And Investment
The result is a generation that refuses to choose between sentiment and practicality. Jewellery is no longer viewed solely as adornment, nor is it treated purely as an investment vehicle. Instead, it occupies a unique middle ground, one where emotional resonance, everyday wearability and long-term value coexist.
This duality reflects broader shifts in consumer behaviour. Today’s shoppers want purchases that serve multiple purposes: pieces that are meaningful enough to treasure, versatile enough to wear often and valuable enough to justify the investment.
The Future Of Jewellery Is Personal
For Gen Z, a piece of jewellery is expected to do more than sparkle. It must tell a story, reflect an identity and remain relevant long after the trends have passed. In that sense, the future of jewellery may not be about tradition versus modernity at all, it may simply be about finding meaningful ways to merge the two.
As brands adapt to these evolving expectations, one thing is clear: the next generation isn’t rejecting jewellery’s legacy, they’re rewriting it on their own terms.
