Nawazuddin Siddiqui is going back to where it all began. After spending nearly 25 years focused on films, the actor has returned to theatre, saying he reached a point where acting in movies no longer gave him the creative satisfaction he was looking for.
Opening up about the decision, Nawazuddin, in an exclusive chat with Kishore Ajwani, Managing Editor News18 India, said that constantly working in films left him feeling creatively saturated, making him reconnect with the stage that shaped him as an actor.
“I didn’t do any theatre all these years and only focused on doing movies. It brought me to a point of saturation in acting. I wanted to do something that Nawaz did before in his early years. I wanted to get hold of that. In every field of work,
you get this saturation point and you feel like stopping. That’s why I started theatre.”
After spending over two decades in films, Nawazuddin Siddiqui is returning to theatre with Naqaab, a comedy-thriller written and directed by Paritosh Painter. The play marks his first stage performance in 25 years and is especially significant as it also marks his acting debut alongside his daughter, Shora Siddiqui.
Talking about working with his daughter in the play, Nawaz said in the same interview, “I was more nervous working with her. I kept looking at her reactions even while I was performing. We did a rehearsal for the show but for me, it was a test. I was wondering if she will get nervous in front of the audience. But kids handle things well and she gave me enough confidence.”
Exploring the literal and metaphorical “masks” people wear in life, Naqaab has begun its live run with performances in cities including Chicago. Naqaab is expected to offer a mix of suspense, humour and unexpected twists.
