Happy Birthday Jasprit Bumrah: Born in Ahmedabad on December 6, 1993, the world’s premier quick, Jasprit Bumrah, celebrates his birthday today. The crown jewel of Indian fast-bowling and arguably cricket’s finest contemporary seamer across formats turns 32.
Having seen humble beginnings in life, Bumrah first burst onto the scene at the domestic level for Gujarat. The unorthodox right-arm seamer, who generates abnormal levels of skid and lift on the ball to enable his all-conditions, all-format and all-conquering streak, initially made his name by dismissing Virat Kohli on his IPL debut back in 2013.
Three years later, some tremendous performances for Gujarat earned him his maiden India cap during the 2016 tour of Australia.
Making an immediate
impression, Bumrah helped India earn a consolation victory during their 4-1 series loss in the One-Day Internationals at Sydney with a spell of 2/40 in a high-scoring match.
In rapid strides, Bumrah soon became a key weapon in Virat Kohli’s dominant Test team by taking five-wicket hauls in landmark overseas wins in Johannesburg, Trent Bridge and Melbourne in his very first season in the format. Since then, Bumrah has represented India across 221 international games and achieved excellence in the Indian shirt.
Jasprit Bumrah’s Career Stats
Bumrah has played 52 Tests with 234 scalps at an astonishing average of 19.79, including 16 five-wicket hauls – 11 in Australia, England, South Africa, and New Zealand, four of India’s toughest oppositions.
Always a dominant force in the white-ball arena, Bumrah has bagged 149 wickets in One-Day Internationals at an average of 23.55 and an economy rate of 4.59. He nearly pulled off the ICC World Cup 2023 crown for India, taking 20 wickets during the team’s remarkable run to the final.
In T20Is, Bumrah continues to turn it into 16-over contests for the opposition by effectively closing the door on them at his end. His 99 scalps in 80 matches have arrived at an economy rate of just 6.36. Bumrah earned the Player of the Tournament award in India’s famous victory at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Bumrah also remains an irreplaceable figure for five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians in the game’s toughest T20 league. He has taken 183 wickets in IPL while conceding only 7.24 runs an over.
Jasprit Bumrah’s Injury Update
In 2018, Bumrah suffered a thumb injury playing the T20Is against Ireland and went on to miss the white-ball leg and also the first two Tests of the subsequent tour of England.
A year later, he went down with his first serious back injury, enduring a stress fracture after the 2019 Test series against the West Indies.
Bumrah suffered an abdominal strain during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and missed the series-deciding final Test in Brisbane.
Two years later, Bumrah suffered another setback due to his back issue and missed the final of the ICC World Test Championship 2023 against Australia after undergoing surgery in March.
Despite the surgery, the back issue recurred during the fifth and final Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia and forced him out of not just the SCG Test but also the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 that followed.
Jasprit Bumrah’s Fastest Ball
Bumrah clocked the speed of 153 km/h during one of his spells in the 2018 Adelaide Test against Australia. It remains his fastest ball in international cricket.
