Chennai, Jun 9 (PTI) The Singappen special police force to enhance the safety of women will function under the direct supervision of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, the government said on Tuesday.
As of now, across Tamil Nadu, the 70 special force units would begin functioning with 140 SIs and 420 constables, an official release said.
The special force is headed by Inspector General of Police K Bhavaneeswari, and in order to assist her in monitoring as many as 270 field units (to be operationalised) across the state, requisite personnel were being appointed for the headquarters.
It includes a superintendent, two deputy SPs, four inspectors, eight SIs and 20 police constables, and Rs 2.15 crore has been sanctioned for the purpose.

Taking part in the launch event, Additional Chief Secretary to the government (Home), K Manivasan, recalled that papers related to setting up the Singappen special unit were one of the three initiatives approved by the CM immediately after taking oath on May 10, 2026.
The release said that the CM ordered the creation of 2,545 new posts across the state for the new unit. New posts comprise 49 Inspectors, 2 Inspectors–Technology, 641 Sub-Inspectors, 3 SIs (Technology), 1,843 Constables and 7 other personnel (Under ministerial services). Police constables will be newly recruited, and they will be provided with special training.
For the special unit, 319 four-wheelers and 101 two-wheelers would be procured. “In order to ensure the efficiency of the special force, hi-tech equipment such as Body-worn cameras with live streaming and drones would be provided.” All other requisite infrastructure and amenities, including communication devices, shall be provided, and the CM announced Rs 354 crore fund allocation for the force.
