The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, on Monday approved the establishment of two 100-bed Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) hospitals in Gorakhpur and Moradabad, along with an ESIC Medical College in Varanasi.
The state government will provide land for the projects to the Government of India either free of cost or at concessional rates.
Officials said the new healthcare facilities will improve access to quality medical treatment, create employment opportunities and support the welfare of workers covered under the ESIC scheme.
New Hospitals To Improve Healthcare Access
The proposed 100-bed ESIC hospital in Moradabad will be built on 2.025 hectares of state government land provided free of cost. The hospital is expected to serve around 93,591 insured
workers and nearly 3.56 lakh members of their families.
It will be constructed by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation, with no additional financial burden on the state government.
In Gorakhpur, another 100-bed ESIC hospital will be set up on more than five acres of land in the Gorakhpur Industrial Development Authority (GIDA) area.
The state has offered the land at a concessional rate of Rs 2,000 per square metre instead of the standard rate of Rs 8,720 per square metre. Both hospitals are expected to generate jobs for doctors, nurses, paramedical staff and administrative personnel.
ESIC Medical College Planned In Varanasi
The Cabinet also approved the allotment of around 13 acres of land in Varanasi for an ESIC Medical College, which is expected to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 800 crore.
Labour and Employment Minister Anil Rajbhar said 50 per cent of the MBBS seats at the college will be reserved for the children of insured workers.
Most of the remaining seats will be available to students from Uttar Pradesh, while some seats will be filled through the state and central governments.
The minister added that nursing and paramedical courses may also be introduced in the future. According to the government, the medical college will benefit around 1.45 lakh ESI cardholders and nearly 5.5 lakh of their family members in Varanasi and nearby districts.
