Thane, Jun 9 (PTI) At least five cars were buried after a large portion of a hill caved in and fell in an industrial area in Navi Mumbai on Tuesday evening following heavy rains, prompting a multi-agency operation to clear the debris, officials said.
Nobody was injured in the incident that occurred around 6 pm in the Pawane MIDC area off the busy Thane-Belapur Road, they said.
“A huge portion of the hill caved in, causing a torrent of debris, garbage, and thick mud to cascade into the industrial complex below. The sludge accumulated up to the first-floor level of several industrial units, trapping raw materials, equipment and parked vehicles, ” an official of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s Regional Disaster Management Cell said.
At least six
industrial units and four to five cars belonging to company executives and workers were completely buried under the landslide debris, he said.
“A multi-agency emergency response was rushed to the spot following an alert about it,” the official said.
Koparkhairane ward authorities with a civic squad equipped with heavy earth-moving vehicles initiated an immediate operation to clear the debris. Two fire tenders and specialized rescue teams are also involved in the task, officials said. PTI COR NP
