Pawan Kalyan’s highly anticipated action drama They Call Him OG, also known as OG in popular branding, is set to create one of the biggest openings in Indian cinema. The Sujeeth-directed film opens worldwide
on 25 September and has already broken pre-book records.
As per the box office tracker Sacnilk, the movie has reached Rs 75 crore in pre-release ticket bookings globally and is consistently moving closer to Rs 100 crore. The mark beats the actor’s last highest opener, Hari Hara Veera Mallu, which took Rs 67 crore at the global box office on its opening day. In terms of booking alone, OG is guaranteed to be the largest career opener for Pawan Kalyan.
Booking Trend Moves OG to New Levels
The frenzy over the movie has been unprecedented, with tickets flying off shelves in major markets. People point out that momentum will propel OG to the Rs 100 crore mark on its opening day, irrespective of regional variations. A Telangana High Court ruling halting a scheduled ticket price increase might dampen some last-minute sales, but analysts posit the overall trend is very strong.
Trade estimates place the movie between Rs 130 crore and Rs 150 crore on day one. Even cautious estimates make the movie a stronger opening than blockbusters like Pathaan (Rs 104 crore), Animal (Rs 114 crore), Saaho (Rs 126 crore), and Jawan (Rs 129 crore). If the higher estimate is true, OG would outdo Leo (Rs 142 crore) and Coolie (Rs 151 crore), ranking among the ten biggest openings ever at the Indian box office.
Star Power and Narrative
The gangster drama is also emotionally resonant for fans because it could be Pawan Kalyan’s last significant screen appearance. In the early part of this year, he went full-time into politics after winning an election to the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly and subsequently being appointed the Deputy Chief Minister of the state.
The movie also stars Priyanka Mohan in a crucial role and brings Bollywood sensation Emraan Hashmi to Telugu cinema. OG traces the path of Ojas Gambheera (played by Pawan Kalyan), a dreaded gangster who returns to Mumbai after a decade-long hiatus to take on adversary crime lord Omi Bhau, played by Hashmi.
With huge advance bookings, robust trade predictions, and fan excitement at an all-time high, OG is set to create new records for Indian cinema. How high it goes on the opening list of all-time will be known once box office figures are reported on Thursday.
