Abhishek Sharma’s dynamic 59 and skipper Shreyas Iyer’s composed 68 helped India gain a slice of positivity despite their first T20I against England being abandoned due to incessant rain on Wednesday.
Their fifties powered India to a competitive 189 for seven, marking a clear improvement after two underwhelming batting efforts in the recent 0-2 series defeat against Ireland. England’s chase of 190 never got underway as rain arrived during the innings break and did not relent. The second match of the five-game series is scheduled in Manchester on July 4.
India’s innings began on a shaky note after opting to bat. Sanju Samson fell early, driving Saqib Mahmood to Tom Banton at point, while Ishan Kishan was run out after a mix-up with Abhishek, leaving
India at six for two. The dismissal mirrored Kishan’s run-out in the second T20I against Ireland in Belfast.
Any concerns stemming from that phase were quickly erased as Abhishek found his rhythm. He launched a counterattack against Luke Wood and Mahmood, taking 21 runs off the fourth over, which included a sequence of 4, 6, 6. Abhishek handled the short ball with confidence, striking two well-controlled pulls, and dominated the third-wicket stand that yielded 82 runs in just over seven overs. His aggressive strokeplay helped India reach 61 for two in the powerplay, including a hat-trick of fours off Wood. He brought up his fifty in just 20 balls before being trapped lbw by Sam Curran.
Shreyas, who had initially played a supporting role, then took charge. He rotated strike effectively while accelerating when needed, striking a pull off Adil Rashid and a lofted six off Wood. He reached his fifty in 38 balls but fell soon after, again to Mahmood, with India at 165.
Shivam Dube added late impetus with an unbeaten 42 off 21 balls, helping India collect 54 runs in the final five overs. However, persistent rain denied any play in England’s innings, as umpires eventually called off the match with insufficient time left even for a five-over contest.
