The second day of the ATP Finals at the Inalpi Arena in Turin was marred by tragedy after two spectators died from cardiac arrests during Monday’s matches, tournament organizers confirmed.
According to
a joint statement issued by the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation (FITP) and the ATP, the two individuals — aged 70 and 78 — suffered cardiac arrests at separate times during the day’s play.
The first incident occurred during the opening singles match between Italian Lorenzo Musetti and American Taylor Fritz, prompting a delay as medical staff rushed to assist the stricken fan.
Tournament officials made a public announcement informing the crowd of a “medical situation in the arena.”
“The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation (FITP) and the ATP express their deepest condolences following the tragic passing of two spectators yesterday during the ATP Finals in Turin,” the statement read.
“On-site medical and emergency personnel responded immediately, providing all possible assistance. Despite prompt intervention and subsequent transfer to the hospital, unfortunately, both sadly passed away.”
The Inalpi Arena was packed with fans on Monday, many of whom were there to support home favourites Musetti and defending champion Jannik Sinner.
Later in the evening, Sinner lifted spirits briefly with an emphatic win over Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, but the day remained overshadowed by the heartbreaking events.
The ATP Finals, which feature the top eight men’s singles players and doubles teams of the year, have been hosted in Turin since 2021, with the Italian city confirmed to continue as the venue through 2026. In light of strong local support and successful organization, the ATP recently extended Italy’s hosting rights until 2030.
While play continued after the incidents, organisers emphasized that medical and emergency services were “fully mobilized” and that spectator safety remains a top priority.
The tennis community has since expressed collective grief over the losses, with condolences pouring in from players, fans, and officials worldwide.
