As fighting in West Asia intensifies, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday declared that Iran is on the verge of being defeated, saying, “there is still work to be done.”
Netanyahu also stated that his nation was very close to dismantling what he called “the terror regime” in Iran.
“There is still work to be done — the main task is to bring down the terror regime in Iran. We are very close to that. We know that the entire axis will ultimately collapse,” the Israeli PM said during his visit to Israeli troops in southern Syria, AFP reported.
‘Won’t Allow Any Terrorist Army To Establish Itself…’
Netanyahu was accompanied by Defence Minister Israel Katz as he visited the Syrian side of Mount Hermon on the Israel-Syria border. In southern
Syria, Israeli forces have maintained their presence in a “security zone” since the fall of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
They occupy what was previously a buffer zone patrolled by the United Nations that had separated Israeli and Syrian forces in the Israeli-occupied Golan since 1974.
“We will not allow any terrorist army to establish itself on our border,” Netanyahu reiterated.
Katz visited Israeli troops deployed in southern Syria two weeks ago, drawing condemnation from Damascus, which called the move a “flagrant violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”. Israel has conducted hundreds of airstrikes in Syria since Assad’s ouster while also making repeated incursions into Syrian territory.
Israeli officials have repeatedly said their forces will remain in the security zone, as the country seeks to establish a wider demilitarised area along its border.
Netanyahu’s warnings to Iran come amid an escalating standoff between Tehran and Washington over the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The two sides have exchanged attacks over the past week, nearly six months after the US and Israel launched their war against the Islamic Republic in late February.
