Newcastle United’s poor away performance in the Premier League continued on Sunday with a 3-1 loss to Brentford, marked by Dan Burn’s second-half penalty concession and subsequent red card.
Igor Thiago
scored from the spot in the 78th minute, following a 56th-minute equaliser by Kevin Schade, as the hosts recovered from an early setback at the Gtech Community Stadium. Thiago then secured his second goal, and eighth league goal of the season, in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
Burn was sent off in the 73rd minute for a second yellow card after fouling Dango Ouattara. Newcastle then replaced concussed goalkeeper Nick Pope with Aaron Ramsdale following a series of substitutions once VAR confirmed the penalty.
Newcastle are yet to win away in the league this season, with five losses and four draws in the top flight since last April, while performing significantly better at home, in the Champions League, and in cup competitions.
Sunday marked their third consecutive away defeat in the league, while Brentford climbed to 12th place.
Manager Eddie Howe commented, “The Champions League, you have to forget about it to a degree but the Premier League is everything. At the moment, we are suffering. We know we will rightly be criticised for our away form, and all we can do is stick together and fight back.”
Harvey Barnes put Newcastle ahead with their first shot on target after Brentford, who have already beaten Liverpool, Manchester United, and Aston Villa in West London, nearly took the lead. Barnes wrong-footed two defenders with a neat twist before slotting past goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
Nick Pope denied Brentford an opener in the 17th minute, pushing away a Mikkel Damsgaard effort and then blocking captain Nathan Collins’ follow-up shot after a goalmouth scramble.
Despite being a goal down at halftime, Brentford had 54% possession and five shots to Newcastle’s two, and it was not long before the scores were level again with Schade heading in off a trademark long throw from Michael Kayode.
Brentford thought they had a penalty in the 61st minute when Burn downed Ouattara, but the referee instead booked Ouattara for diving.
Newcastle striker Yoane Wissa, out injured since his move to Tyneside from Brentford, was absent from the squad but the home fans still expressed their feelings about his departure.
Sean Dyche earned his first league win as Nottingham Forest coach after his team rallied to beat Leeds 3-1 at the City Ground. The victory came after last week’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United and moved Forest, who are second from bottom, to within a point of safety.
Lukas Nmecha put Leeds ahead in the 13th minute, but Ibrahim Sangare equalised two minutes later. Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson – from the penalty spot – completed the comeback after the break.
Crystal Palace and Brighton drew 0-0 at Selhurst Park, while Aston Villa quickly bounced back from last week’s defeat to Liverpool by routing Bournemouth 4-0.
Villa endured a desperate start to the season – failing to win any of their first six games in all competitions. But Unai Emery’s team has powered back impressively by winning eight of their last 10. Emiliano Buendia, Amadou Onana, Ross Barkley, and Donyell Malen all scored, while goalkeeper Emi Martinez denied Antoine Semenyo from the spot as Villa moved up to seventh in the standings.
