A large sinkhole on a busy road in Thailand’s capital city Bangkok led to huge chaos as people scurried to safety after it swallowed three cars and electric poles.
Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt confirmed
while speaking to the Associated Press that three vehicles were damaged and that there were no casualties.
Citing officials, he said that the collapse was caused by an ongoing construction of an underground train station.
Videos from the moment of the collapse are now going viral on social media. One of the videos shared by Russian-state run RT shows the moment when the collapse happened. It began with the road slowly sinking down, pulling down several electricity poles and damaging water pipes.
A sinkhole is a sudden depression or hole in the ground caused when the surface layer collapses into an underground void. They usually form in areas where natural processes or human activities remove the support below the ground.

Many cars tried to back away while the hole grew larger and completely severed the four-lane road.
At one point the hole widened up to the edge of a police station and exposed its underground structure. A nearby hospital was forced to shut down services due to the sinkhole. The hospital authorities said they would close the outpatient services for two days. The Bangkok city officials said the hospital’s structure was not affected, but people were ordered to be evacuated from the police station and other nearby buildings.
Officials have also cut electricity and water in the area. Chadchart said relevant authorities are working to fix the hole as fast as they could amid concerns that heavy rain could cause further damage. Bangkok is currently in monsoon season.
Typhoon Ragasa, now in the South China Sea, will cause heavy rain and flooding in northern, northeastern, central and eastern Thailand this week, the Thailand Meteorological Department said, according to Bangkok Post.
During the period, the Thailand weatherman said, heavy and persistent rain as well as flooding was possible in the North, Northeast, Central Plain including Greater Bangkok and the East.
